The four artists shortlisted for the 2012 Turner Prize are announced. Last year, Scottish sculptor Martin Boyce wowed the judges with a series of everyday items, such as park benches and bins, reimagined through the use of industrial materials.

Stars gather as the TV BAFTAs honour excellence in television. Last year saw triumph for the BBC's Sherlock, which beat rival Downton Abbey to the Best Drama Series Award.

Friday 18 May

The Olympic Flame arrives in Great Britain. Following its tour of Greece, the beacon will reach Land's End in Cornwall before more than 8,000 bearers, including 7,200 members of the public, run the torch through some of Britain's most important and beautiful locations.
