Mad Men – Back to the 60s

Celebrating the season 5 premiere of the hugely popular Mad Men, Sky Media and Sky Atlantic wanted to add a unique twist to the occasion by creating a stunt that would really turn heads…

To immerse viewers in the 1960s, the premise of featuring original ads from the 1960s was conceived, and it would become one of the most surprising advertising events recently seen on television.

Campaign Objectives

  • Create an exciting launch event
  • Celebrate the new season and reflect the era of the show
  • Capture the imagination of audiences and press in a creative way

Delivering the Goods

Sourcing a range of original ads from the 1960s wasn’t going to to easy, with old ad formats, client buy-in and rights presenting a big set of hurdles to overcome. However, through plenty of hard work we were able bring iconic ads to the screen.

What followed were ad breaks featuring memorable ads from brands including Fairy Liquid, Tetley’s Tea, Cadbury’s Flake and more. The premiere 2 episodes of Mad Men season 5 would feature 3 ad breaks, all comprising original 1960s ads, plus specially created retro idents for Blackberry, the channel sponsor. This stunt was a real crowd pleaser and offered nostalgic value to audiences, both finding themselves immersed in the world of the series, plus a bonus for those would remember these ads from the original broadcast. Leading up to the TX date, the press were covering the eagerly awaited stunt and during broadcast, fans took to social media outlets like Twitter to share their thoughts.

Audiences were Tweeting by looping in the #madmen hashtag. Comments included: “Sky Atlantic returns to the 1960s tomorrow, with only vintage 60s ads in the breaks of #MadMen – That is bloody brilliant!” and “Sky’s plot of showing old ads during Mad Men breaks was clever and classy”.

Hitting various communiucation touchpoints and treading new creative ground, there can be no doubt the new season of Mad Men was celebrated in an eye-catching and unique way.

The ads were a great success and earned a hugely positive response from both press and audiences who tuned in to watch.

Marketing Week wrote: “Sky Atlantic’s decision to run of-the-era ads during the ad breaks as the season debuts with a double bill tonight (9pm Sky Atlantic) is not just cute but clever.”
