At the beginning of June, Community Channel set out a vision to become the UK’s first community-owned TV, online and mobile brand dedicated to social impact. To deliver this vision they are offering members of the public, including film makers, charities, media partners and, crucially, its 10m viewers, the opportunity to own a stake in the channel by buying community shares through the crowdfunding platform, Crowdfunder.
But Community Channel needs your help. And it needs it now. Without the support of people across the country, owning the Channel and supporting that vision, the goal to reclaim the community, drive social impact and transform television will come to an end on Thursday, 30th June with the channel coming off air.
Community Channel is currently available UK wide on Freeview, Sky, Virgin Media and freesat. It nurtures new talent and offers charities and communities a platform to share their work and content. Since 2000, the channel has shown over 75% of original and UK-premiere programming and brings together a diverse mix of talent to create an impact for little-known and well-established organisations and their causes on the airwaves.
It is the only channel that turns viewing into doing, as a quarter of all viewers do more in their communities directly inspired by programming they have watched on the channel.
We want to transform Community Channel into the first people-owned TV, online and mobile brand. To become self-financing over the next five years, grow advertising and sponsorship income and secure further investment. This would enable Community Channel to reach even more viewers across the UK.
Caroline Diehl, CEO and Founder of Media Trust, the charity that launched Community Channel, said:
“This is an IPO for the people. We are giving people the opportunity to buy a share and, depending on how much they invest, even become the voice behind a TV promo or curate a whole series for a favourite cause – within Ofcom reason. We need to raise £300,000 – equivalent to just an hour’s typical BBC programming – by the end of this month if we are to continue beyond 30 June.
