Starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson and Jessie Buckley, Chernobyl brings to life the true story of the unprecedented man-made tragedy, and the brave men and women who made incredible sacrifices to save Europe from unimaginable disaster.
Written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (The Identity Thief, The Huntsman: Winter’s War), Chernobyl is directed by Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, Blackstar), and is executive produced by Jane Featherstone (Humans, Broadchurch) for Sister Pictures, Carolyn Strauss (Game of Thrones, The Wire) for The Mighty Mint and Gabriel Silver for Sky. Johan Renck and Chris Fry (Humans, The Smoke) co-executive produce and Sanne Wohlenberg (Black Mirror, Wallander) produces.
Johan Renck, the show’s director says the story is all about human sacrifice: “There were 700,000 people around the Soviet Union involved in the clean-up operation and you understand that this would never happen in any other part of the world. A similar accident in a western territory in those days – they would just have sealed the area off and never let anybody in there. I met with liquidators in the Ukraine and there was a sense of people doing this because it has to be done. There is a purpose that is given to you when you’re appointed a task like this. When people act without considering their own wellbeing you learn that there is something deeply human in having purpose.”
And when asked what was the most terrifying fact in the scripts were, Renck said: “I don’t think a lot of people know that Chernobyl was spewing out two Hiroshima bombs worth of radiation per hour for quite some time. Even in the UK and Sweden they tried to put a lid on the scope of this catastrophe to avoid panic.”
