The wait was long but worth it when Game of Thrones returned to our screens for it’s final season on April 15th. And it appears 5.25 million people were waiting to watch Season 8 Episode 1. The 7 day consolidated audience was an increase of 12% on the Season 7 launch which saw an audience of 4.673 million. Season 8’s first episode also beat season 7’s finale to become the biggest programme on a Sky Channel ever.
The combined audience, once playback and catch-up is included, was split between 4.089 million viewers for the 2am simulcast and 1.161 million viewers for the 9pm showing. 192 thousand people stayed up to watch the 2am simulcast live, which is the largest 2am simulcast on Sky Atlantic Ever.
The popularity of the fantasy land filled with dragons, incest and betrayal shows no sign of slowing down. The second episode of Season 8 attracted an overnight audience of 3.621 million, overtaking episode 1’s overnight audience.
