Sony Pictures Television Revamps Entertainment Portfolio And Launches UK’s First Free-To-Air Movie Network

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) will launch the UK’s first free-to-air movie network as it rebrands its existing entertainment networks in the UK to form one cohesive Sony-branded portfolio

Sony Movies, Sony Movies Action, Sony Movies Classic and the seasonal pop-up channel Sony Movies Christmas will form the Sony Movies network. At the same time, the Sony-owned entertainment channel True Entertainment will be relaunched as Sony Channel.

On Tuesday 10th September, SPT’s rebranded free-to-air portfolio will launch with Sony Channel, Sony Movies, Sony Movies Action and Sony Movies Christmas, followed by the launch of Sony Movies Classic in January 2020. All channels will be available on Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media with a new modern and cinematic design alongside an exciting slate of new content.

Building on the success of SPT’s current UK movie channels and the growing popularity of movie viewing in free-to-air SPT will cater to this consumer demand by bringing an even stronger and more appealing line-up of movie channels which will leverage Sony Pictures’ rich cinematic heritage.

“This year at SPT we are embarking on an exciting and significant rebrand across our UK network portfolio,” said Holly Comiskey, SVP, Distribution and Networks UK at Sony Pictures Television. “In an increasingly fragmented TV landscape it is important for us to strengthen our position as a family of channels and bring them together under the Sony brand. By refocusing our existing portfolio and drawing more deeply on Sony Pictures’ robust film and entertainment content, we are creating a powerful unified network with broad appeal.”

“SPT’s rebranded movie network will deliver a wider and richer selection of films for our viewers to enjoy and discover, for free. We aim to capture and curate the very best of film from the golden eras of movie-making to contemporary favourites, complemented by Hollywood insight and exclusives from the Sony Pictures studio. Sony Channel will celebrate iconic television with timeless scripted and entertainment series UK audiences will know and love,” said Steve Hornsey, VP Entertainment Programming UK at Sony Pictures Television

At launch, the free-to-air movie channels will feature a raft of SPE titles including Bad Boys, Elysium, Rambo, S.W.A.T: Under Siege, Hitch, Stepmom, Matilda, Just Go With It, Groundhog Day and Christmas With The Kranks. Sony Movies Classic, which debuts in January 2020, will draw from Sony Pictures’ storied and extensive Columbia Pictures movie library showcasing important and iconic titles from the history of movie making including Kramer vs Kramer, Gandhi, Oliver! and more. Sony Channel will also aim to capture the love of great classic drama and entertainment with a warm and familiar mix of scripted series, nostalgia and popular gameshows powered by the best of Sony’s library. Titles include Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch, TJ Hooker and classic Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is one of the television industry’s leading content providers, producing, distributing and carrying programming worldwide in every genre and for every platform. In addition to managing one of the industry’s largest libraries of award-winning feature films, television shows and formats, SPT is home to a thriving global content business, operating 24 wholly-owned or joint-venture production companies in 12 countries, as well as linear and digital channels around the world.
